Bachy Soletanche designs and delivers a full range of geotechnical solutions to support the construction, upgrade and maintenance and of defence facilities. We have a strong record of delivering highly-sensitive and confidential schemes, bringing our technical expertise to the fore to improve national security.
The demand for future-proofed, resilient and efficiently-designed infrastructure is no greater than in the defence sector. Whether geared towards providing seismic or climate resistance, longevity and stability must be embedded into the design of defence facilities.

The demand for future-proofed, resilient and efficiently-designed infrastructure is no greater than in the defence sector. Whether geared towards providing seismic or climate resistance, longevity and stability must be embedded into the design of defence facilities.
Complex design requirements coupled with a high-security environment mean defence projects can be some of the most challenging to resource and deliver. Bachy Soletanche works with its clients to understand their needs and meet these challenges head on, providing geotechnical support from conceptual design to project completion.
When necessary, we integrate extensive pre-construction trialling to validate designs and maximise efficiency so no time or money is lost during delivery. When scheduling construction activities, we account for the additional security procedures involved so that our programme continues to flow as smoothly as possible.
Bachy Soletanche offers a comprehensive package of geotechnical solutions to suit the nuances of defence sector projects, including retaining walls (secant, contiguous and diaphragm walls), grouting and piling (CSP, LDA, CFA and restricted-access piling).
Case Studies
Defence Project, England
The overall project aim was to expand an existing building, by constructing an extension, which will be used as part of the wider manufacturing facilities. The 40m x 30m site required a secant honeycomb grid to provide a ground improvement solution with a seismic design capacity. This is the largest value ground improvement project undertaken by Bachy Soletanche in the UK.
Help For Heroes, Plymouth
The purpose-built recovery and rehabilitation facility was located on land that was contaminated with asbestos, hydrocarbons and heavy metals, the client undertook a programme of ground remediation prior to the piling works commencing. To manage the residual risk of material being left in the deeper areas of made ground, the team opted to use the Screwsol method.
Rosyth Dock Yard, Fife
Bachy Soletanche were awarded a contract to design and construct a temporary hard/firm secant pile retaining wall to facilitate the remodelling of an existing dock entrance. Steel dowels were installed through the bases of the hard piles to provide restraint at the toe of the wall. The team also installed ground anchors and a secant retaining wall.
